| Summary: | 본 연구는 한국천주교회가 코로나19에 대응해온 방식과 그것을 통해 변화된 모습을 살펴보는데 목적이 있다. 코로나19는 많은 사람들에게 충격을 가져왔지만, 특히 대면 집회를 근간으로 하는 종교들에게 가혹했다. 코로나 19 전파를 막기 위해서는 사회적 거리두기가 필수적이었고, 종교 집회는 그 첫 번째 금지 대상이 되었기 때문이다. 많은 종교들이 선택의 갈림길에 서게 되었는데, 한국천주교회는 코로나19 방역에 적극적으로 동참하는 쪽을 선택했다. 한국천주교회가 적극적으로 방역에 나섰던 이유는 무엇일까? 이에 대한 해답을 찾기 위해, 본 연구는 코로나19에 대응해온 한국천주교회의 외적인 모습과 내적인 변화 양상을 살펴보았다. 한국천주교회의 외적인 대응은 공동체 미사 중단, 사회적 거리두기의 일상화로 말할 수 있다. 이렇듯 적극적으로 사회적 거리두기를 시행한 데는 천주교회의 교계제도, 대규모 감염병에 대한 역사적 경험, 사회교리의 핵심 원리인 ‘공동선’ 추구, 사회적 기대에 부응하려는 태도가 영향을 미쳤다. 한편 사회적 거리두기의 일상화는 교회 안에 변화를 가져왔다. 코로나19로 인해 신자수가 감소하고 움츠려든 모습이 나타났지만, 교회 구성원들은 창궐 초기의 충격을 딛고 찾아가는 사목과 일상 신앙생활의 활성화를 위해 노력하고, 적극적으로 가난한 사람들에게 다가가려 노력하고 있다. 이처럼 코로나19는 쉽지 않은 도전을 불러왔지만, 한국천주교회는 그것을 통해 자신을 돌아보고 새롭게 도약하기 위한 준비를 하고 있는 것으로 보인다. The purpose of this paper is to examine how the Korean Catholic Church has responded and changed since the outbreak of COVID-19. The global pandemic shocked many but was particularly harsh on religion based on face-to-face meetings. Social distancing was essential to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and religious assembly became an early subject of safety precautions. Many religions were at a crossroads, and the Korean Catholic Church chose to participate in the prevention of COVID-19. To determine why the Church actively participated in quarantine, I have analyzed the Church’s evolution during the pandemic. The external responses of the Korean Catholic Church include the suspension of mass and the routinization of social distancing in church buildings. The active implementation of social distancing has been influenced by the sacred hierarchy as the Catholic Church’s religious system, the historical experience of large-scale infectious diseases, the pursuit of the "common good" as a key principle of the Church’s social doctrine, and its efforts to meet social expectations. Internally, social distancing has forced a decline in the number of attendees at services. However, Church members are trying to overcome the shock of the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, to revitalize daily religious life, and to actively offer help to the poor. In conclusion, COVID-19 has brought difficult challenges, but the leadership and members of Korean Catholic Church are reflecting on the changes and preparing to take a new leap forward. |
