"종교도 역시 격리(religion in quarantine) 중"이라는 표현은 코로나19 팬데믹 상황에서 종교가 처한 상황을 보여준다. 이 논문의 목적은 ‘재난과 종교’의 관점에서 전염병과 종교의 관계사를 살펴보고, 코로나19 국면에서의 종교의 현재적 상황을 비판적으로 읽어 냄으로써 종교가 나아갈 방향을 모색함에 있다. 윌리엄 맥닐은 그의 저서 『전염병의 세계사』를 통해서 전염병의 문명사적 함의를 밝힌 바 있다. 맥닐의 연구는 종교와 전염병의 관계를 검토하는 데에도 좋은 참고가 된다. 맥닐의 연구를 통해 종교가 전염병으로부터 강력한 영향을 받아왔으며, 부분적으로 전염병의 만연이라는 재난 상황에 대하여 대처해 왔음을 알 수 있다. 전염병의 역사를 돌이켜보면, 전염병의 창궐이 시대의 흐름을 바꾸는 변곡점이 되었음을 알 수 있다. 작금의 코로나 사태도 인류 문명사의 분기점이 될 수 있을 것이다. 코로나19는 종교의 공공성에 대한 물음을 묻는 계기로 작동하고 있다. 종교가 공공성을 담지하기 위해 무엇부터 할 수 있을까? ‘소통’과 ‘연대’에서 그 길을 찾을 수 있을 것이다. 위드/포스트 코로나 시대 종교가 나아갈 방향을 모색함에 있어 ‘재난 유토피아’를 주창한 레베카 솔닛의 상상력을 차용할 수 있을 것이다. 재난 국면에서 종교계와 종교인들은 스스로의 경험과 자원을 성찰적으로 재해석하여 재난 이후의 삶을 예비해야 할 것이다. 종교와 시민사회의 연대를 통해 ‘희망’과 ‘관용’의 다이내믹스를 실천적으로 보여 줄 때이다. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, mankind has been living a life of ‘isolation’. The expression "religion in Quarantine" shows the situation of religion in the context of the covid-19 pandemic. The purpose of this paper is to examine the historical relationship between epidemics and religion from the perspective of ‘disaster and religion’, and to find the direction for religion by critically reading the current situation of religion in the COVID-19 phase. William H. McNeil, in his book 『Plagues and Peoples』, has revealed the civilization-historical implications of epidemics. McNeill’s work is also a good reference to examining the relationship between religion and the epidemic. McNeill’s research shows that religion has been strongly affected by epidemics, and in part has responded to the catastrophic situation of epidemics. Looking back on the history of the epidemic, we can see that the outbreak of epidemics became an inflection point that changes the flow of the times. The current COVID-19 crisis could also be a turning point in the history of human civilization. COVID-19 is working as an opportunity to ask questions about the public nature of religion. What can religion do first to contain publicity? We’ll find that way in ‘communication’ and ‘solidarity’. Rebecca Solnit’s imagination, who advocated a ‘disaster utopia’, can be borrowed in finding a direction for religion in the with/post COVID-19 era. In the face of disaster, religious communities and religious people will have to prepare for a post-disaster life by reflectively reinterpreting their own experiences and resources. It is time to show the dynamics of ‘hope’ and ‘tolerance’ in practice through solidarity between religion and civil society. |
