Religion and Globalization: The Formation, Disjuncture and Expansion of the Modern Religious System

| Zusammenfassung: | 현대사회의 맥락에서 종교연구의 이론적 진전은 종교에 대한 관찰과 분석의 범위를 지구사회 전체로 확장시킴으로써 성취될 수 있다. 이 논문은 지구화의 관점에서 현대 종교의 구성에 대한 총체적 전망을 획득하려는 시도이다. 20세기의 주요한 사회과학적 종교이론들은 서구의 종교지형에 치중했을 뿐만 아니라, 국민국가 사회를 분석의 기본단위로 활용하면서, 세속적 · 합리적 근대화 패러다임에 인식론적으로 의존하는 경향을 보였다. 이를 넘어서기 위해, 21세기의 종교이론은 지구화가 초래하는 미증유의 종교적 복합성 전체를 조망하며 설명하도록 요청받는다. 이 글에서 필자는 현대종교의 구성을 지구화로 인한 ‘종교’의 등장과 변형이 초래하는 것이며, 이는 분리할 수 있지만 서로 연결되어 동시적으로 나타나는 삼중적 현상으로 제시한다. 첫째, 역사적 지구화의 흐름은 ‘세속’을 종교로부터 분리하는 방식들을 만들어내며, 이는 ‘종교’라고 불리는 구별된 영역 또는 체계의 지구적 구성을 돕는다. 둘째, 현대 지구화의 진전은 국민국가 질서와 결탁된 ‘종교’의 경계를 넘나드는 개인적이고 감각적이며, 일상적이고 선택지향적인 ‘영적전환’을 추동한다. 셋째, 지구화로 인한 생활세계의 압축은 종교의 부흥, 공공종교 또는 탈세속 사회의 등장을 위한 비옥한 토양을 제공한다. 이러한 지구종교의 전망은 일련의 관련문제들을 만들어내면서, 지역의 상황과 문화적 배경에 따라 다양하게 맥락화 된다. A theoretical breakthrough for the scientific study of religion in a modern context can be achieved when the scope of observation and analysis on religion is extended to the whole of global society beyond a series of theoretical perspectives on religion that are based on the paradigm of modernization. This article is aimed at providing a perspective through which to holistically observe the contemporary construction of religion in the processes of globalization. Leading social scientific theories of the 20th century on religion display a tendency toward the concentration on the Western religious landscape, the application of nation-state society as the basic unit of analysis and an epistemological dependency on the paradigm of the secularist and rationalist modernization. To get over such theoretical impasse, the 21st century theories of religion are requested to observe and explain the entirety of unprecedentedly high religious complicity that is caused by globalization. In this article, I recognize contemporary religious diversity as ‘global religion’, something formulated by the rise and transformation of the modern religious system in processes of globalization, and analyze it as a threefold phenomenon that can be divided into the schemes of ‘religion’, ‘post-religion’ and ‘post-secular’ that may differently appear, but are nevertheless connected to each other. |
