The early church formulated the trinity to build its soteriology. For the trinity helped to understand the history of Jesus as that of God. If the trinity was suggested as a theory to secure the Christian soterology, we should have thought that it came from a deep pastoral deliberation, not from a theological speculation. Thus Jurgen Moltmann says that the trinity is not a theoretical doctrine, but a doctrine for the Christian experience and practice. Especially, Moltmann finds the foundation of the trinity on the cross of Jesus and begins the trinity with it. For the trinity is a doctrine known by experiencing Christian salvation. Furthermore, Maltmann thinks that the trinity starting from the cross of Jesus is well revealed through the ministry of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. In other words, when we understand that creation is not only the Father’s work, that incarnation is not only the Son’s work, that glorification is not only the Holy Spirit’s work, but that all of these are also part of the trinitarian ministry, the characteristics of the trinity are more clearly revealed. By revealing that all activities are not only the work of one God, but also the work of the Trinity, Maltmann shows that the Trinity is a unique doctrine of God of Christianity different from the monotheism or pantheism. |
