| Summary: | This paper is an attempt to connect the local history of the Catholic missions in the east of the Shan State, Myanmar, to the wider context of Catholic missions worldwide. I will outline the historical determination of the friction between Christianity and ancestor cults, with reference to non-Buddhist minorities, thus contrasting the Southeast Asian missionary experience with previous missionary experiences in Latin America and China. I argue that the early attempt to eradicate ancestor worshipping in Eastern Shan State was based on a people categorization and a related missionary paradigm, developed in the early context of Latin America sixteenth-seventeenth century missions.
