Description
Summary:From 1978 to 1985 the KomMissieMemoires (KMM) conducted 862 interviews with Dutch missionaries. Overall, this amounts to 1,308 tapes of recorded oral documentation, which are preserved by the Katholick Documentatie Centrum (KDC) in Nijmegen. This article records the way the KMM makes this historical material accessible for scholarly research. In the first place, an extensive registration has been made of every interview in which, apart from the personal records of the interviewee, all the topics discussed in the interview are recorded. Furthermore, the KMM has begun drawing up abstracts; a short summary of all the relevant information from the interview at hand. In 1989, the first series of 235 abstracts from the Indonesian interviews was published by the KDC under the title "Stories of Missionaries" ("Missieverhalen"). In the near future, a second collection containing 327 abstracts of the interviews held with Dutch missionaries working in Africa will be published. This article discusses a number of topics brought forward by a reading of these stories as characteristic of missionary activities in Africa. The abstracts themselves provide a general overview of missionary work in Africa, but also access a unique collection of historical material contained in the interviews.
