Description
Summary:The conference “Teaching Ecumenism in the Context of World Christianity,” held in June 2021, was an initiative of the Ecumenical Institute at Bossey together with related programme units in the World Council of Churches. This article offers background to this initiative by sketching historical developments in the field of teaching ecumenism and by outlining creative synergies and tensions that have emerged in relation to academic scholarship in the area of World Christianity. By bringing together colleagues teaching in the areas of ecumenical studies, World Christianity, and related fields, the conference aimed to enter more deeply into conversations around epistemologies and methodologies, where participatory approaches engage discourses like global-versus-local and unity-versus-diversity in a critical and constructive way.
