| Summary: | In his reconstruction of the process and motivation of Constantine´s adoption of Christianity, the author proposes a number of new individual aspects. He commences with an analysis of the earliest testimonials by the Emperor himself after his conversion, his massive moral and material support for the Christian clergy and ecclesiastic communities, and Constantine´s role as the first ruler of all Christendom up to his death in 337. Finally, it is shown that the Emperor wanted to suppress non-Christian religions and make Christianity the sole religion of the Empire and all humanity. Der Autor bietet eine in verschiedenen Einzelaspekten neue Rekonstruktion des Vorgangs und der Motive von Konstantins Hinwendung zum Christentum. Er analysiert die frühesten Selbstzeugnisse des christlich gewordenen Kaisers, die massive ideelle und materielle Förderung von christlichem Klerus und Kirchengemeinden und die Rolle Konstantins als erster Herr der gesamten Christenheit bis zu seinem Tod 337. Abschließend wird gezeigt, dass der Kaiser die nichtchristlichen Religionen verdrängen und das Christentum zur alleinigen Reichs- und Menschheitsreligion machen wollte. |
