| Summary: | This article aimed to analyze the interface of old asylums, today, called Long Stay Institution for the Elderly (ILPIs), with religion. Starting from a bibliographic review, the study deals with the origins of asylums and the new configurations of this secular institution. In sequence, it presents the development of a market for ILPIs in the Brazilian context and addresses Religious Assistance with a focus on the asylum space. The study reveals a change in the profile of asylum institutions, whose history is directly linked to religious associations and charitable organizations as well as the military. Currently, there is still the presence of medical specialties and health service offerings. In the new settings, religion remains present and becomes an element of fundamental importance for both the elderly and the institution. |
