| Summary: | In this article the author writes on the issue of the beginning of human life in embryos as well as on the responsibility of the Pope in relation to the wide spread epidemic of HIV/AIDS. The Pope is using the argument of DNA identity over the whole span of human life to prove that the embryo is a human being as soon as it starts its existence. The article attempts to show that the argument against abortion on the basis of DNA identity is strong, but not convincing for a Catholic who maintains that the soul is a necessary part of the human being. As we don't know when God creates the soul for a given embryo, it cannot also be established when human life as such is starting his/her existence. Papal acceptance of hylomorphism on one hand, and the case of the peculiar development of an embryo of monozygotic twins makes the papal stance even more difficult to defend. The article is arguing that fixing the moment when the soul is created by God for an individual embryo is in fact limiting God’s freedom. Limiting God’s freedom is even more clear when we take into account the fact of spontaneous abortion which kills about 200 million embryos each year. The article points out that the Pope may be regarded as an accomplice in the spread of HIV/AIDS because his relentlessly negative stand on contraception has been forced in the political way by the episcopates of the Third World countries on the government policies of those countries. |
