Description
Summary:The ontology of George Santayana is being provided in this paper within a conceptual framework in order to highlight the autonomy of a philosophical discourse, which is capable of answering questions that address the realm of subjective existential experience within a certain meaningful unity. The doctrine of spirit, the key to Santayana’s philosophy, will serve to shed a light on a certain image of conditio humana and the by Santayana assumed tragic status of human existence. The paper attempts to explain the specific nature of this tragic basing on the background of other major philosophical theories and, in particular, in the light of his polemics with Nietzsche. The final horizon of the paper is being made by the question on the perspective of thinking about an opened humanity.
