Description
Summary:In the political system of the People’s Republic of Poland, the Catholic Church and the political party - the PZPR, have been constantly competing for influence in the society. Between 1945 and 1990 the intensity of the conflict between these institutions varied, but it was permanent, taking place on many levels, including extremely important ideological field - in the sphere of values and worldviews that were to be recognized by society. Support for such practice of the regime at the time was the censorship of the press and periodicals called Catholic. The records of the "Catholic section" had a very broad thematic scope referring to the various issues related to the relations of the communist state and the Catholic Church. The activity of censorship clearly "subscribed" to the current situation of the PZPR confrontation with the Church, showing the complexity of this confrontation. It could not have been otherwise in the face of worldview differences, the idea of the model of state and society in communism, and the doctrine of the Church and the teaching of his hierarchies. The worse were the relations "people’s government" - Church - the more records were imposed on the "Catholic section". The article referred to the years 1945-1967. The scope of censorship activities was clearly expanding to weaken during the "thaw" after October 1956. In the mid-1960s, called Gomułka "stabilization" period, after time of relative compromise, the conflict between Church - communist authorities, broke out with all its might. Records, recommendations and censorship interventions related to the years 1965-1967 illustrate the broad background of the dispute over the character of the Millennium celebrations of 1966 which the authorities wished to discount in their favor.
