Summary:Everynationstrivestowardstheprovisionofqualityeducationforitscitizens,because of the realisation that education is necessary to engineer and consolidateanynation’s developmentalprocess.However,achievingqualityeducationwouldbeamirageifteachereducationisnotingoodshape.This paper examined the historical development of teacher education in Nigeria, thepurposeofteachereducation,the present position of teacher education in Nigeria,the role and attributes of a good teacher and the need for professionalisation of the teaching profession. Moreover, animportantthrustofthepaperhingesonthechallengesfacingteachereducationinNigeriawhichincludeinadequatefunding,poor societal perception of teacher education; lackofcommitmentamongteachers;problemofattritioninteaching;lackofmotivationandunethicalbehaviourofsometeachers.Basedonthesechallenges,itwastherefore,recommended,asthewayforward,thatteachingprofessionshouldbetrulyprofessionalised;publicshoulddeveloppositiveperceptionofteachers;thecurriculumofteachereducationneedstobereviewedinconformitywithglobaltrends.Itwasalsorecommendedthatthereshouldbeimprovedwelfarepackageforteachers.Thegovernment,aswellas,other stakeholders should ensure that be fittingin frastructures are put in place to enhance better teacher education programme.
