Résumé: | Goodleadershipisafunctionofcompetencies,character,andthecommitmenttodoingthehardworkofleadership.Characterhastraditionallyreceivedtheleastattentioninbothresearchandpracticesandconversations,yet,whenwethinkaboutthefamousandinfamousleadersofrecenttimes,whetherinthespheresofeducation,business,politics,sportsandothers,itisimpossiblenottothinkoftheircharacters.Weholdthebeliefthatcharactersupportsboththepositionanddispositiontolead.TheobjectiveofthispaperistoinvestigatehowcharacterdevelopmentcanbeusedasatoolforleadershipdevelopmentandrestructuringintheNigerianpolitics.Thepaperfoundevidencethatanintentionalleadershipdevelopmentcanchangeleaderidentityintheformofmovementtowardvaluingleadershipbehavioursandskillsverydifferently.Consequently,leadersneedtorecognizethatthechoicestheymakefororganizationalactivitieshavetofittheirownworld-view.Pursuingthefitbetweenone’sworld-viewandplannedorganizationalactivitiesensuresthatleaderscontinuouslyimprovetheirethicalandcharacterdevelopment.Thepaperconcludesthatreshapingleadershipcharacterdevelopmentisbasedontheassumptionthatonecanonlystrivetowardtrulyethicalleadershipwiththeknowledgeandethical qualities that will make a leader excel in the position of authority. |
