Description
Summary:The tale of "Pistis Sophia" is one of the main narrative units in the first part of the Coptic Codex Askewianus (ca. Vth century). Compared to the other textual sections, this unit is characterized by a marked use of OT quotations (especially the Psalms of David). Beside these the anonymous author quotes, as if they were biblical quotations, five passages from the so-called Odes of Solomon. These latter constitute a pseudepigraphical collection of controversial poetical works, whose origin has been situated in a Christian milieu - maybe Syriac - between the late Ist and early IIIrd centuries. As is emphasized here, Psalms and Odes are the framework of the paradigmatic tale of Pistis Sophia, which was narrated by Jesus to his disciples in order to accomplish their instruction. These texts are also the hermeneutical keys that make possible for the disciples the solution and fulfillment of the post-paschal revelation, in the moment of the realization of the eschaton, on the 15th of the month of Tibi. Apart from the possible symbolical function of this chronological setting - Clement of Alexandria reports this day to be the same in which some Gnostics feasted the baptism of Jesus - the interpretative line here suggested on the basis of analysis of these passages is that, in line with the soteriology of this treatise, the quotations from the Odes of Solomon are connected to a baptismal context.
