| Summary: | This article serves the purpose to investigate the problem of supernatural beings that fragment into multicoloured avatars in Postclassic Nahua and Maya traditions, following new ways in order to clearly understand this aspect of Mesoamerican polytheism. The article is supported by a deep research on both written and iconographic sources and shows that, besides suggesting a terrestrial organization founded on four or five sections, the chromatic fragmentation is a way to remark the cohort of entities that are responsible for a harmonious working of cosmic mechanism. The dissertation also contributes to reveal that colour is one of the instruments used by ancient Mexicans to point out both complexity and dynamism of the different gods whose identity and functions evolve following the rhythm of mythical and temporal cycles.
