| Zusammenfassung: | Building on the extraordinary research by Mario Cereghini on the projecting windows in the Alpine architecture, this paper aims to define the different types of overhanging rooms in the houses of the Danubian regions: from Tyrolean erker (projecting windows) through the Balkans, to Byzantium şahnişin (solarium-projecting rooms). According to Cereghini, the tradition of projecting windows in the Alpine housing architecture has a triple source: (1) the Italian stylistic tradition, (2) the Nordic manner, (3) the influence from the East. Cereghini also asserts that the irregular spread of overhanging windows in the Alpine valleys might be explained by the theories known as "the Danubian ways." He argues that if the "onion-shaped" silhouettes of some bell spires in the Alps are recognized as oriental influences, why couldn't the same be said for the Erker? After all, the Ottomans, who inherited the Byzantine housing tradition, were stopped at the gates of Vienna in 1683. This paper will constitute the first critical inquiry on how the same housing typological element (projecting volumes) developed over time, and took different forms along the Danubian regions, accordingly various cultures and local traditions. |
