Description
Summary:The role of spiritual transformation in positive psychology’s study of human flourishing is discussed in terms of Frederickson’s (2001) broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions. Spiritual transformation is conceptualized as a process of change within the self toward an identity with something sacred through which meaning is discovered. Such change is frequently accompanied by strong feeling and often will yield a positive affective state through a new or renewed sense of purpose, value, efficacy, and self-worth. In line with Frederickson’s theory, such satisfied needs for meaning may broaden thought-action repertoires, undo lingering negative emotions, fuel psychological resiliency, and trigger upward spirals toward improved emotional well-being.
