Description
Summary:The Latvian theologian Karlis Kundzinš in his educational work and theological views stressed the need to develop a free and critical personality. His personal development was very much a result of education he received at home of his father who was a popular Lutheran pastor and he was considered to be a spiritual father to many younger generation pastors. In theology he was influenced by modern thinkers of his time (like Harnack). His approach developed as a reaction to the outdated, dogmatic pedagogical approaches of a number of his contemporaries. They alienated children. Kundzinš was convinced that children should be encouraged to learn from life and deeds of other personalities. Relationship among children, parents and teachers should be based on true humanity, attitude of mutual service and recognition of ideals. Theory and praxes for him was an inseperable whole. Kundzinš also took into consideration challenges posed by the growing influence of materialist thinking propagated by the leftist circles (The New Current). He was not afraid to discuss aspects of marxist philosophy with school-children and showed weakness of its concepts. The article an attempt to reveal Kundzinš thought and personality in wider context of cultural history of Latvia because Kundzinš was not only a pastor.
