Description
Summary:Continued from a previous article (see entry 49A:3082). Provides an overview of historiography since 1945 on Dutch Catholicism in the 19th and 20th centuries, focusing in this second part on publications relating to the wide field in which religion and church are connected with society. First of all, literature on pillarization and de-pillarization is discussed. Then a number of publications are surveyed concerning sexuality and morality, marriage and family, youth, health and social care, education and science, media, trade unions, politics, and recreation. The number of publications has greatly risen since 1975. Furthermore, the scope of research has widened considerably from the contemporary perspective of the modernization of Western society. A case is made for increased research into the origins of the "Catholic movement" in the 19th century, and into the actions of bishops and (regular and secular) clergy in the last two centuries, who are still rather simplistically considered the instigators and upholders of an antimodern Catholicism.
