| Résumé: | A number of studies have been published on refugees arriving in Sweden in the 30s. However no study has so far tried to portrait the situation of a special group of students and young graduates of Jewish origin fleeing from Hitler Germany, surprisingly called the "emigrants" although they were actually immigrants. It is my intention to fill that gap relying on the memories of my husband’s and my own experiences and on interviews of a number of friends from that time. It is a story on how to live on very small means. On how to solve the problem put to us by the Swedish authorities giving us the right to stay in Sweden but refusing us the right to work, how to take on work illegally without breaking the laws, feeling like Germans due to inheritance and upbringing, being seen as, Germans by the Swedes while not being accepted as such in Germany. |
