Description
Résumé:This article interrogates some key concepts and categories of religion in contemporary Muslim discourses. It identifies two contrasting approaches that set the framework for negotiating modern challenges for Muslims. The first approach is a critical reading of Islamic sources that emphasizes the personal dimension of belief and devotion. The second associates Islam with a comprehensive culture that brooks little compromise. Between these two, Muslim intellectuals across the wider spectrum employ religion to engage in debate with each other. Muslims in general employ the categories of religion to (re)shape Islam.
