Description
Summary:Acknowledging the discredited nature of much of contemporary modernization theory, the blame for failure is here allocated to an unwarranted preoccupation with Zweckrationalität as crucial to an understanding of modernization and modern society. Instead of abandoning the classics, as has been advocated, this paper offers a revision. Drawing on theoretical resources of the theory of action, Weber's concepts of Wert and Zweckrationalität are reformulated into four-function rationalities for general as well as social action. The latter permit the prediction of cross-societal convergence, divergence, and historical invariance in specific types of social bonds as outcomes of modernizing change.
