Description
Summary:One of the striking conclusions one arrives at when reading studies analyzing college students' religiosity is the numerous inconsistencies in the findings. One possible explanation for these may be the way in which religiosity has been defined and operationalized. In past research a uni- or bi-dimensional approach has been employed. The present study investigates religiosity by developing Guttman scales for five different dimensions of religious involvement. These are thought to constitute the minimal elements of any religious system. The findings clearly convey that individuals give expression to their religious orientations in different ways and some dimensions show a greater degree of religious involvement than do others. The findings help to account in part for many of the inconsistencies reported in previous investigations by pointing out that the extent of involvement is dependent upon the indicator of religiosity used.Although the social scientist is still far from finding an adequate and comprehensive measurement of religiosity, the employment of a multidimensional approach gives a more adequate appraisal of religiosity in its many manifestations than does either a uni- or bi-dimensional approach.
