Description
Summary:The subject is the impact of scarcity, rapid socioeconomic change, and urbanization on a traditional Hindu pilgrimage center in Eastern India. Scarcity resulted from an increasing population that had to cope both with limited natural resources, such as land, and resource-restricted institutions, such as a pilgrim temple with insufficient temple service positions to provide even minimum incomes for those who were qualified to serve as temple priests. In 1950 the construction of a new town adjacent to the pilgrimage center provided new economic opportunities for the hardpressed priests. The consequences included simplifying and abandoning temple services as young educated priests took new occupations in the town. The decline of the temple did not signify the disintegration of religion or the rise of secularization. Rather, the focus of religion shifted from temple rituals to expressions of popular religion which rose in importance in the past twenty years.
