| Summary: | Abstract This essay begins by situating Spanish scholarship on Islamic law in the wider context of Arabic and Islamic studies in Spain, stressing two salient characteristics of the latter: its concentration on Andalusī subjects and its relative isolation from the rest of Western scholarship. I then review the production of Spanish scholarship in the field of Islamic law, focusing on three historical periods: the first steps in the nineteenth century (Gayangos, Ribera and his pupils); the period of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) when the work of López Ortiz, Morata, and Vila was cut short just as Spanish scholarship on Islamic law was coming of age; and the post-war period, when several attempts were made to renew the study of Islamic law. In the conclusion, I assess the current situation and consider future prospects. A basic bibliography of Spanish scholarship on Islamic law follows the article. |
