| Summary: | One thing is for certain—development researcher Masooda Bano has chosen an apt title for her book examining religious institutions and individuals in Pakistan. In The Rational Believer: Choices and Decisions in the Madrasas of Pakistan, the Oxford Lecturer explores the actions of Pakistani Muslim men, women, and children as they relate to the madrasas, which are, essentially, religious schools and seminaries that educate over 1.5 million Pakistani youth. The title fits so well because Bano hews so tightly to her stated purpose of “developing a detailed account of the decision-making processes of the religious actor, with a focus on the madrasas of Pakistan” (3). Note the order. The main priority is to explain religious decision-making within the context rational choice theory. |
