Summary:This article indicates the leading place which America holds in the development of the psychological study of religion and then passes on to an account of the outstanding theories as to the psychological sources of religion; it describes the methods that have been devised to discover and interpret religious experiences and offers a survey of leading investigations into the primary phenomena of religion; it considers the significance of subconscious and of social factors in the development of religious ideas and activities and, in conclusion, offers suggestions for the critical evaluation of psychological studies of religion.
