| Summary: | Theodore Bar Konai’s paragraphs about the Kantaeans are of great importance for the history of Mandaeans. The complex historiographical construct where various sects are mentionned and many grammatical forms deviant from literary Syriac make their interpretation difficult. The analysis of the author’s polemical intent and quotations shows that Theodore assembles two different text corpora within a linguistically inconsistent montage and uses stereotyped heresiological fictions (an anti-Samaritan Kuthaean narrative and an anti-Baptist Dosithean one) in order to write the history of the only group he knows : the Mandaeans. |
