Description
Summary:This work investigates parliamentary speeches of two Gaucho political agents - Moab Caldas (Representative in Rio Grande do Sul’s Parliament from 1959 to 1966) and Vera Soares (City Council of Porto Alegre, in 2017), both participants of African-Brazilian religions. It is sought to identify the strategies of political representation in their speeches, as well as the logic implied for social legitimation in the defense of this communities within its surrounding society. The comparative exercise proposed here provides us with an analysis on the different kinds of representation of these religiosities in the public sphere in Brazil, specifically in the political field. These speeches are collected and compared from two different historical moments regarding political representation of African religions in Brazil, the first as a period of whitewashing and the latter of reafricanization, even though this kind of political representatives are rare cases in Brazil.
