| Summary: | Enquanto na Europa da segunda metade do século XIX - principalmente na França - intelectuais da categoria de Jules Michelet, Ernest Renan e Hippolyte Denizard Rivail, dentre muitos outros, produziam obras monumentais que seriam estudadas até nossos dias, a América do Norte - ainda sob forte influência vitoriana - procurava construir sua identidade. Os Estados Unidos, jovem nação, culturalmente dependente da Inglaterra era um Estado majoritariamente agrário e fortemente influenciado pelo protestantismo puritano. Nesse contexto, uma mulher frágil e negra, Ellen White, escreveu ao longo de setenta anos, mais de cem mil páginas manuscritas - sem o intelectualismo dos franceses - mas com profundidade digna de nota, sobre assuntos aparentemente tão díspares como psicologia, educação, religião e regime alimentar. O objetivo do presente trabalho é, sucintamente, analisar poucas linhas da obra holística de Ellen White a partir do contexto de sentido de sua época e propor relações entre a produção europeia (francesa) do período e sua obra. While in Europe during the second half of the nineteenth century - especially in France - intellectuals as Jules Michelet, Ernest Renan and Hippolyte Rivail Denizard, among many others, produced monumental works that would be studied to this day, North America - still under strong Victorian influence - was looking to build its identity. The United States, a young nation, culturally dependent on Britain, was predominantly an agrarian State and strongly influenced by Puritan Protestantism. In this context, a frail, black woman, Ellen White wrote over seventy years, one hundred thousand manuscript pages - without the intellectualism of the French - but with remarkable depth on subjects as seemingly disparate as psychology, education, religion and diet. The purpose of this work is to analyze a few lines of the holistic work of Ellen White from the context of a sense of her time and propose relations between the European production (French) for the period and her work. |
