Description
Summary:Starting with Illuminism and with the beginning of the process of secularization the social role of religion has been strongly redimensioned. Even though Religion essentially no longer guides scientific research and having lost its political and civil compulsion, it has continued to exist even after Illuminism. In what sense is it then possible to speak about «religion after Illuminism»? According to Lübbe, an answer to this question is possible by way of a definition of religion taken from today’s functional sociology: religion is the «practice and overcoming of the contingency». The contingency overcome by way of religion is the contingency which cannot be readily transformed for the action and which is «recognized» as such. Thus, religion performs a specific function that cannot be satisfied in other areas and for this reason it resists the process of secularization.
