Description
Summary:Benjamin’s concept of aura has acquired new interest in an era when technical reproduction has advanced far beyond what he imagined possible. With digital technology succeeding in reproducing images that can be more ‘real’ than the original, is the aura now altogether lost? In a careful interpretation of Benjamin’s texts, its application to a short fi lm by Antonioni, and the detailed analysis of the concept of the aura in the artistic genre of the performance, the authors propose that the aura remains a useful hermeneutical key of interpretation of art works and the process of their reception, if it is not understood as an aspect of the art work itself, a kind of essential element, but discovered instead in the encounter between work and recipient. Rather than being lost, the aura has moved to another moment in the process of reception.
