| Summary: | In this essay, the teachings and writings of the American «modern orthodox» rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik (1903-1993) are presented in their double dimensions: as theological hermeneutics of the halakhic nature of Judaism and the Jewish existence; and as dialectics between the homo halakhicus and the more universal human calling for improving and adjusting the world. Through the comments made by some of his best students (such as David Hartman, Irving Greenberg, and Abraham Besolin), the personality of «the Rav» emerges as a deeply infl uential more (teacher) and scholar, an acute philosopher of the Jewish faith, and a challenging thinker whose intellectual and religious legacy is destined to enlighten the future horizon of Jews and Judaism. |
