Es geht um die bis heute währende Auseinandersetzung zwischen Atheismus und Religionsphilosophie. Im Ausgang von Kants Kritik des Atheismus und seiner ethisch fundierten Gotteslehre wird eine Typik von Denkformen des Atheismus entworfen. Anhand dieser Typik kann die Eigenart von Nietzsches Atheismus herauskristallisiert werden. Des Näheren wird Nietzsches Verfremdung von Kants Gottespostulat untersucht. Grundstürzende Konsequenz ist Nietzsches Voraussicht des europäischen Nihilismus. In Entsprechung zu Nietzsches Destruktion der Gottesidee steht die von ihm konsequent zu Ende gedachte und in der Folgelast gefährliche Umkehr der Tradition der Geistseele zur Tierseele des Menschen.
