| Summary: | Bede Griffiths (1906-1993) has emerged as one of the twentieth century's leading lights in inter-faith spirituality. This article examines the nature of dissociation as reflected in his life experience and writings. Comparison with the philosophical anthropology of Descartes suggests that the dissociation of body, mind (or soul in Griffiths's case) and spirit is part of the Cartesian legacy with which we still have to deal. In presenting Griffiths's spirituality as a remedy for Cartesian dissociation, it is suggested that it is ultimately only by addressing modern Western culture's repression of the Spirit (or Atman of Hindu thought) that integration, non-duality, is attainable. |
