| Summary: | On the surface of things, there is considerable reason to be pessimistic about the future trajectory of Christian-Muslim relations. Extremist rhetoric and behaviour in parts of the Muslim-majority world, manifested by militant groups like ISIS and the Taliban, continue to raise concern. In Christian-heritage societies in the West, powerful extremist groups continue to incite anti-immigration sentiment and blatant Islamophobia in significant parts of Europe and the United States. These are hardly positive auguries. This essay argues, however, that such a bleak picture does not take into consideration people of good will in these societies who subvert such patterns through their concerted daily efforts to promote better understanding of and communication with "the other." They refuse to give in to hate and cultivate instead a culture of justice and reconciliation. They provide us with hope - a desideratum in both the Muslim and Christian traditions. |
