| Summary: | Poseidon has recently benefited from renewed scholarly attention, contributing to re-evaluate his role in ancient Greek imaginary. By opening the research previously limited to literary evidence to the archaeological and topographical evidence, new perspectives on “Poseidonian landscapes” have emerged. Arcadia, a land-locked region where Poseidon Hippios is celebrated with fervour, is here taken as a case study to try and go further in identifying the god’s realm of action. Areas with floods seem to be his preferred worship places, while in other areas he plays a crucial part in myths but is hardly worshipped alone. There also seems to be a connection between his patronage over freshwater and horses. Overall, natural observation seems to have been instrumental in choosing the location of his worship places. Poséidon a récemment bénéficié d’un regain d’attention, ce qui a contribué à réévaluer son rôle dans l’imaginaire grec : de nouvelles perspectives sur le « paysage poséidonien » émergent lorsque l’on inclut les sources archéologiques et topographiques à l’étude documentaire. L’Arcadie, région sans accès à la mer où le dieu est célébré avec ferveur, est ici prise comme cas d’étude afin d’affiner l’identification de la sphère d’influence du dieu. Les régions sous le coup d’inondations récurrentes semblent faire partie de ses lieux de culte favoris, alors que dans d’autres régions il occupe un rôle crucial dans les mythes sans y être honoré seul. Un lien apparaît aussi entre son patronage de l’eau douce et des chevaux. Globalement, l’observation de phénomènes naturels semble avoir joué un rôle-clé dans le choix de ses lieux de culte. |
