L'analyse ici ce changement entre le IIe siècle avant notre ère et le VIe de notre ère au moyen d'une étude des relations entre textes sacrés et serments, porteurs d'une autorité religieuses concurrente. La perspective traditionnelle, présente tant dans la littérature juive du Second Temple et dans la culture grecque contemporaine, faisait de l'alliance (définie en tant que serments créant l'adhésion à un groupe) le fondement des lois et/ ou des textes sacrés d'un groupe. En revanche, elle n'opérait pas de distinction nette entre le serment et l'alliance. Après le Ier siècle avant notre ère, toutefois, des auteurs juifs et chrétiens considéraient les serments privés comme des menaces pour les alliances, les textes sacrés et les lois établis par le groupe. Je présente deux manifestations de cette perception : les inquiétudes d'auteurs juifs et chrétiens concernant les « serments criminels » privés, subvertissant les textes dotés d'autorité ; et les innovations propres aux deux communautés (des IIIe et IVe siècles de notre ère) dans la manière de jurer sur les Écritures, exprimant physiquement les fondements du serment privés dans la loi universelle. Cette innovation, bien qu'il s''agisse d'un phénomène proprement judéo-chrétien, participe peut-être d'un mouvement plus général dans l'Empire romain vers la subordination du serment privé à la loi universelle, ainsi que le suggère une innovation préalable : le fait de jurer tous les serments légaux et officiels par le nom de l'empereur et de sa tyché. | ||
