Description
Summary:During the last three decades, a new field of interest has been devel-oped in Western history of religion: Whilst turning away from the »Exotic«, European history of religion became a focus of attention. Though this confirms to postcolonial awareness, it in turn may trigger the question whether, and if, then how an extra-European historiography of religion from a European perspective should still be possible without falling prey again to eurocentrism. This article argues that such extra-European historiography of religion not only is possible but needed – for non-hegemonic, equal ›interac-tions‹ between agents of religious historiography worldwide. For this, the essay reflects on a basic attitude of ›self-conscience‹ and makes two methodological suggestions. The benefit of this approach is, then, been shown by a case example taken from an Indonesian school atlas and the potential it can provide for such intend-ed ›interactions‹: in describing the atlas’ contextual notions of »religion« and »history«, which in turn may stimulate the identification of topics and ways also of doing European history or religion.
