Description
Summary:The article analyzes the work of the Jesuit theologian Peter Thyraeus (1546-1601), and especially his De variis tam spirituum, quam vivorum hominum prodigiosis apparitionibus ("On the different and marvellous apparitions of spirits and living men", 1594), a lenghty treatise on occult phenomena stretching from the apparitions of ghosts, demons and images of living persons to the nocturnal noises afflicting the haunted places. This issue gained indeed widespread interest in European theological literature, both in Catholic and Reformed areas, between late 16th and early 17th century, in a cultural context that witnessed the heavy presence of demonic epiphanies and witch beliefs in the political-religious debate.
