| Summary: | Portions of the viticulture section of the Nabataean Agriculture are closely related to material preserved in the Byzantine collection known as the Geoponica. Among the forerunners of the Geoponica was the Synagoge georgikon epitedeumaton of Vindanius Anatolius of Berytus. A fragment of Anatolius' work survives in Greek, and comparison of this text with the corresponding section of the Nab. Agr. reveals close verbal similarity as well as remarkably identical content. In other cases, where Anatolius' work must be reconstructed from the Geoponica and from a Syriac verson, there is a striking agreement in the order of presentation between Anatolius and the Nab. Agr. Anatolius' Synagoge was one of the sources from the Graeco-Latin tradition upon which the compiler of the Nab. Agr. relied for strictly agricultural information. |
