| Summary: | Using the example of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, the article discusses the current and predictable future signifijicance of digital reproductions and the fundamental signifijicance of the digital for the supply of scientifijic literature by libraries. The article looks at the paid services offfered by commercial providers, the facilitation of research by retro-digitization of historical prints and manuscripts in open access which, however, is limited by the copyright when it comes to the digitization of contemporary sources, as well as the increasingly “digital library” and the role of the humanities research library as a partner of digital humanities. Finally, the essay advocates an even stricter qualitative equalization of the conventional analogue library visits with the virtual use of the digital library online. |
