| Description: | While we have not been focusing specifically on Hutton's gradual and only indirectly delineated shift toward an Incarnational theology, we have seen intimations of the shift that led first to his resignation from the Unitarian National Review in 1861, to his editorship of the secular weekly, The Spectator, to a semi-confessional tract that clearly marked him as a Broad-Church Anglican. Pursuing this spiritual pilgrimage by way of these manifold encounters with secular culture, Hutton brought to his mature theology an acutely analytical mind, a capacious empathy with modern thought, a discerning appreciation of literature as a nexus of the sacred and the secular, and an acute vision of God's interventions in his world |
