Description
Summary:This article explores resources that can be used to develop an Anglican theology in relation to Buddhism. The distinction between a theology of religions and a theology of interfaith relations is noted, and it is suggested both poles are needed. The paper engages in a close reading of Generous Love and 'Towards Our Mutual Flourishing' as resources for developing a contemporary approach; however, it seeks to go beyond them. It also engages specific Buddhist contexts and teachings. It notes, However, conflicting trends between, on the one hand, those engaging Theravada systems who may stress the dichotomy between Christian teachings and Buddhist concepts and, on the other, those relating to Japanese Pure Land who see the challenge of similarity. Therefore it is noted that there can never be a single Anglican theology in relation to Buddhism. Nevertheless, principles towards an Anglican theology in relation to Buddhism are developed.
