Résumé:Communal consciousness is a form of political consciousness, the objective of which is to forward the interests of one religious community over another. It is the most common form of political consciousness in India. The article examines communal conflict in India and the relationship between communalism, economic development and social change. It inquires to what extent strife between religious, ethnic and linguistic groups is a reflection of deeper social, economic and political changes. Communal terrorism in Punjab is analysed. (DÜI-Sen)
