Résumé:Discussions of the theory of knowledge play an important role in Islamic theological manuals. In Islamic theology, knowledge is, generally speaking, divided into acquired knowledge ('ilm muktasab) and necessary knowledge ('ilm daruri); the latter one is particularly important because it "appears to be the basis of most of the theological arguments". To demonstrate the prominent position of necessary knowledge, the author examines examples of how this topic is treated by various Islamic theologians, mainly from the Mu'tazilite and the Ash'arite schools. After a brief general definition of necessary knowledge with its specific features (e.g. occurence without one's power, production by God), the author takes a closer look at some epistemological models to show various ways of subclassifying necessary knowledge. Then the author moves on to some present theological issues in which necessary knowledge plays a part (e.g. the question of God's existence, the question of man's volition). Finally, he points out that necessary knowledge played an important role not only in the development of epistemological theories in Muslim theology, but in theological discussions as well in spite of the widespread popularity of speculative argumentation.
