Zusammenfassung:The emergence of this special issue, from the maelstrom of responses1 to views on the Religious Studies Project website to the original post by Teemu Taira, "Categorising 'Religion': From Case Studies to Methodology"makes it clear that the various points of view around how we use the term and define "religion" generate a lot of heat, steam, and hot air. This in some ways is quite understandable, because at stake is not simply differing views on the nature and status of religion, but whole worldviews, conceptions of what the very study of religion is and should entail, and not to mention that very tricky subject: academic egos. This paper will be, primarily, a restatement of some of the core issues and arguments of my original response in the "So What" paper, 2 more or less repeating what was there. However, I will find it useful to expand a few points for clarity (the response was written to a very tight word count that meant some arguments were abbreviated), while I would also like to provide a new introduction and conclusion that locates this in relation to the various responses and the issues that came up.
