Description
Résumé:Martin Luther's significance for the modern history of freedom is a theme of Hermann Cohen's ethics and his shorter writings from the Reformation memorial year of 1917. For this reason it is worth asking what this neo-Kantian Jewish philosopher had to say about the bondage of the will, the main theme of De servo arbitrio. Cohen's ethics gives the Kantian concept of autonomy a contemporary expression, and his late philosophy of religion continues the critique of Augustine's theology of predestination with its traces in Luther's response to Erasmus. Finally, Religion of Reason: Out of the Sources of Judaism develops a new interpretation of the reconciliation of sinful humanity to God that is near to the Lutheran concept of simul justus et peccator.
