Description
Résumé:This article examines the possibility of exercising critical thought while respecting people's convictions. To do so, it first considers the place of ethics and religious culture(s) in the curricula, then that of critical thinking in educational programmes in Quebec, particularly in terms of cross-cutting competences. An operational definition of this thinking is then put forward, on the basis of which an analysis of the Ethics and Religious Culture(s) syllabus is developed. In this regard it is argued that while critical thinking makes it possible to ground the ethical aspect of the curriculum, it is virtually absent from the religious culture(s) component. It is then proposed, in order to integrate opportunities for critical reflection in this area of learning, that emphasis be placed on an approach centred in the personal epistemology in and through which the relationship to religious knowledge will be established not in the order of conviction, but indeed that of belief.
